Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
The following is an open letter to the Mayors/Reeves
and Councillors of
the Municipalities of the District of Timiskaming.
Dear Mayors/Reeves and Councillors:
As a resident of Kirkland Lake and the District of
Tirniskaming, 1 am
very concerned about the Bennett Environmental Inc.'s
proposal to locate
a hazardous waste incinerator within the town limits
of Kirkland Lake,
in the District of Temiskaming. I live downwind from
and within
one-and-three-quarter miles of the proposed site on
Archer Drive.
Also, 1 am very disturbed that the citizens are only
getting the
positive aspects of this hazardous waste incinerator
from Bennett
Environmental Inc., the local media and the Kirkland
Lake council.
To help disseminate information to the citizens of
Kirkland Lake, I
assisted Public Concern Temiskaming (a voluntary
organization in
Timiskaming concerned with the impact of the burning
of hazardous waste
on the environment and health of its citizens) in the
local distribution
of a pamphlet, titled "Do you want a hazardous
waste incinerator in
Kirkland Lake?"
To ensure that our district does not become the toxic
dump of North
America and to protect our food supply and the health
of our citizens
for decades to come, it appears that the other
councils in Timiskaming
will have to assume the leadership in investigating
the hazardous waste
incinerator that the Kirkland Lake council is
wholeheartedly, and
without reservation, supporting.
Yours truly,
Barbara Bukowski
Kirkland Lake Resident
