Concerned Citizens,
The front page article, "Not one-sided
(headline) and Supporters show up
to balance attack on Bennett's proposed Kirkland
Lake plant (sub heading
line)", which appeared in the Northern Daily
News, Monday, January 28,
2002 by Jim Patrick contains a number of
significant inaccuracies.
Obviously, Jim Patrick did not check his facts with
the four Quebec
people before issuing this article. I would suggest
that you DISREGARD
THE ARTICLE.
For eaxmple, one very glaring error is the
statement: "......at the last
St. Ambroise municipal election, the incumbent
mayor supported RSI
(Bennett) while the challenger opposed the company.
The election results
indicated a two-thirds majority for the
incumbent." THIS IS NOT TRUE.
The incumbent mayor did not run.
Also the following statment is incomplete: "The
group did say
Recupere-Sol did sampling but no baseline study was
made prior to the
company setting up." It is true that Bennett
did not do baseline
sampling, but the Quebec Ministry of the
Environment did do baseline
testing in November 1997 in the area before Bennett
opened. The Ministry
of the Environement found the site in question had
been devoid of PCB
and dioxin contamination . After 300 days of
operation, further testing
done by the Regional Health Unit revealed that
contamination had shown
up in their tests.
We will make every attempt to get clear, accurate
and complete
information to you.
