Matheson/Cochrane Residents Get Involved in Battle Against Bennett Incinerator

Matheson – Opposition to the proposed Bennett dioxin incinerator continues to grow across Northern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec. Now residents in the Cochrane district are getting involved. On Thursday night, a Matheson citizens' organization RAIN (Recycling and Investing in Nature) will host a citizen’s forum of the potential dangers posed by PCB incineration. They will be joined by other grassroots organizations springing up in Cochrane and in the Temiskaming area.

The guest speaker at the meeting will be Dr. Neil Carman, an internationally recognized expert in PCB incineration issues. Dr.
Carman, a former incinerator inspector with the State of Texas, will address the issue of dioxin and PCB threats posed by incineration. The Matheson appearance will mark the second time Dr. Carman has come to Northern Ontario to speak out against the Bennett incinerator.

Joanne Critchley Browne, is helping to organize the Matheson meeting. “I’ve been meeting people all across the Cochrane region who are worried about PCBs and dioxins being burned in the north,” says Critchley Browne. “People want to get involved. They want to know what they can do to protect this region.” If approved the Bennett incinerator would be the largest of its kind in Canada.

The project has been opposed by over 34 doctors in the Temiskaming region. In a public statement, the doctors warn that burning PCBs and dioxin represent health risks to mothers and infants.

As well, Cochrane/Temiskaming MPP David Ramsay has accused the project of being in non-compliance of national CCME (Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment) guidelines for incineration.
