1) DATE: JUNE 16TH
ACTION ALERT FOR A "RESPECT THE NORTH" PROTEST
(FIRST CALL)
Public Concern Temiskaming is asking people from
across the province to set aside Sunday, June 16th to join together
in a public action in Temiskaming. An event is being planned to bring
people to Temiskaming from across the North.
June 17th is the first annual Global Day of Action
against Waste Incineration which is being organized throughout the
world by the Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA).
Mark your calenders for June 16th and rent your buses.
You can help protect current and future generations of
Northerners from being poisoned by dioxins from the proposed Kirkland
Lake toxic waste incinerator and associated transportation risks.
Contact your friends, neighbours and relatives and ask
them to come with you to demonstrate our strength and demand to
RESPECT THE NORTH.
Interim details are being developed and will be
released as soon as possible.

2) Northern Daily News - 5/22/02 - Letters to the Editor
Bennett project cements doctor's plans to move
To the editor:
It would seem that The Northern Daily News' anonymous
editorial staff delights in reducing local physician credibility. The
concern raised was that of the location of a toxic waste incinerator.
We are particularly concerned about the effects of its waste products
on children.
In his letter to the editor, Mr. Longland misses the
point. Physicians continue to educate themselves in environmental
health. Currently; there is a series of articles in the CMA Journal
(received by all physicians across Canada) on environmental issues
which is also available online to the general public (www.cmaj.ca).
One doesnt need to be an engineer to understand
statements such as "it is inadvisable to engage in new
incinerator construction with present knowledge and conditions."
(Rowat SC, Med. Hypotheses, 2000) and similar conclusions in numerous
scientific journals.
I applaud the citizens who attended local information
sessions. However, when a company is speaking about its own product,
this is by definition a conflict of interest, as is any report from a
consultant on their payroll. Some facts that weren't disclosed at
such sessions: several hundred incinerators have been recently shut
make their products look , clean; progressive countries are using
much cleaner methods of eliminating toxins, etc.
This project will likely have little effect on the
health of the average adult in Kirkland Lake, even if they work at
the plant. The same cannot be said for infants and children. Nor can
it be said for fish and game and those who eat them. And imagine the
economic effect on those whose business depends on this.
Think about what disrespect this shows for our First
Nation citizens and their land-based heritage. Consider that a trump
card for Northern Ontario's economic future is a clean environment.
While the toxicity of this incinerator is worrisome, it pales next to
the toxicity in the hearts of those who would sacrifice these things
for a bit of money that the average Kirkland Lake citizen will not
even notice. It is this attitude, not exposure to toxins, that I
don't want my children to be exposed to, and has cemented my plans to move.
